Camille Claudel

Geralt Wolterbeek / Camille Claudel

Camille Claudel (8 December 1864 - 10 October 1943) was an artist as well as the student/model/muse/lover of French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Twenty years her senior, Rodin is best known for his works The Thinker and The Kiss. Their relationship was intense, tumultuous, and doomed. After 15 years of being his mistress, Camille left Rodin in 1898. Her health deteriorated, she destroyed her work, and was convinced Rodin was out to get her. In 1913 she was institutionalized and there she remained until her death, 30 years later.
